                    #Drive4HospiceAfrica

A group of 27 adventurous volunteers will this January embark on an epic 2,000 kilometre drive from Dar as Salam in Tanzania to Kampala in Uganda to deliver ambulances and fire engines to the Ugandan Government, raising vital funds for Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) at the same time.

They are using the trip to support the work of HAU which provides palliative care to thousands of critically ill Ugandans near end-of-life.

In Uganda more than 90 per cent of people with cancer and other serious illness will never receive treatment, or even a diagnosis, due to the poor health system and costs. €25 will keep a hospice patient in care for one month.

Every donation – no matter how big or small – will help ensure more critically ill people, and those living with life-limiting illness, access pain relief, medical care, and psychological support – and will have a pain-free and dignified end-of-life.

Let’s DRIVE change together – and bring hope to those who need it most.

Donate today (link below) and help Hospice Africa Uganda continue in its mission to relieve suffering and pain by bringing palliative care to all in need in Uganda and Africa.

About us

Hospice Africa Ireland supports the work of Hospice Africa in Uganda and across the Africa continent. Hospice Africa Ireland (HAI) promotes awareness of the activities and impact of Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) and also facilitates fundraising initiatives with our partners and donors throughout Ireland.

The founder of Hospice Africa, Dr. Anne Merriman is the granddaughter on both sides of her family to Irish emigrants who had moved and become part of the Irish diaspora in Liverpool. She joined the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMMs) and went to college in UCD where she trained to become a Doctor.

When Anne set up Hospice Africa operations in Uganda in 1993, it was the Irish Embassy in Uganda that donated the first vehicle that was used to delivery home based palliative care services to patients. Ever since Irish Aid and many other Irish corporate, charities and NGOs such as the Irish Hospice Foundation have worked with Hospice Africa Uganda sponsoring many impactful projects.

Many medical and non-medical volunteers have traveled from Ireland to work with HAU over the years and many continue to help in some way. A group of HAU alumni established Friends of Hospice Africa in Ireland in 1999 and it then became a registered charity in Ireland. The charity was formally changed to Hospice Africa Ireland in May 2008.

The Board is made up of HAU volunteer alumni from all across the island of Ireland who support Dr Anne and HAUs vision of palliative care for all in need in Africa and who contribute in a number of ways to HAU. if you would like to get involved in the Board or fund raise for HAI you can find the contact details below.
