How we operate

Uganda is the clinical headquarters of our operation in Africa, where we produce morphine, treat patients and run education programs for healthcare workers in other African countries.

There are three sites in Uganda: the headquarters in Kampala and two smaller sites in Hoima and Mbarara. In each of these sites, we have an extremely dedicated team of doctors, nurses, drivers, pharmacists and administrative staff, all driven to provide the best care available for our patients. The teams run daily drop-in clinics, home visits, daycare and outreach programs. On top of that, we often welcome volunteers to stay and help out wherever they can. We are eternally grateful for their constant dedication to our mission.

Our work

Clinical Care

Our clinical teams treat patients every day, providing them with holistic palliative care from within the clinic, at their homes, and at outreach sites. They work from three sites across Uganda: Kampala, Hoima and Mbarara.

Education

A core part of our mission is to enable palliative care across Africa. We do this by providing training for students and healthcare professionals from across the continent.

International Programs

Although our clinical centre is in Uganda, we work with partner organisations in many African in order to promote palliative care across the continent.

Morphine Production

Hospice Africa produces affordable morphine on site in Kampala which is then prescribed to our patients and sent out to other medical facilities across the country.

Our Story

In 1993, our founder, Dr Anne Merriman came to Uganda with the aim of setting an example for affordable palliative care across Africa. 27 years later and we have achieved so much with great thanks to our dedicated team, volunteers and supporters. However, there is still a lot of work to do.

Only 57% of Ugandans get access to a healthcare worker if they need one and 95% of cancer patients do not reach curative treatment. Please support us however you can and read more about our story below.
