International Programs
Our aim
International Programs is the part of our organisation responsible for extending the reach of palliative care across the African continent. Whilst our clinical centre cares for patients directly across Uganda, International Programs is a dedicated team that works with partner organisations in order to train healthcare workers, raise awareness, lobby governments and provide information on palliative care initiation and sustainability in the various settings in Africa.
Our work
When Hospice Africa set up operations in Uganda, there were only three countries in Africa that had access to palliative care. We are proud to say that through our work, that number is now 37 as shown on the map.
Our International Programs team are currently working with countries such as Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Malawi. The department also runs two five-week Palliative Care Initiators’ Courses every year at Hospice Africa in Uganda. To date, we have trained 245 health workers from Anglophone countries and 137 from Francophone countries.
