Dr Ged Faulks Rides Again!!!

After a year of serious illness, Dr Ged Faulks completed a 24mile ride of the Wirral Way to raise vital funds for Hospice Africa and celebrate his return to health and strength. It’s a remarkable story of courage and perseverance on Ged’s part, but also of excellent medical care and the support of family and friends.
It was 12 months ago after the annual HA charity ride on the Wirral that Ged, a retired GP and long-standing trustee of HAUK, felt unusual fatigue and ankle swelling. Following hospital investigations he was diagnosed with kidney problems and started treatment. After no response he was admitted again in November for intensive treatment, but still no response and suffered a massive internal bleed and further kidney damage.
Ged was now adjusting from full fitness to life with a zimmer, drips, no response to treatment, and +15g of fluid on board, whilst day-by-day losing strength and weight to alarming levels. After 2 months in hospital however with Ged’s kidneys starting to work again he could return home and start his gradual recovery. Immunocompromised, so shielding during lockdown, he started to attend his local gym in August and got back on his bike, cycling slowly at first and then onto 10miles. So yesterday marked a huge milestone on Ged’s journey back to health and strength. He’s massively grateful to friends, family and the NHS that all their skill, efforts and love have born fruit. His VirginMoneyGiving page for Hospice Africa is here and donations are gratefully received.
