Hospice Africa USA was launched in 2013 by a small group of Americans who had volunteered at Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) and were inspired to help HAU thrive through ongoing financial support and additional visits to Uganda (fully funded by the volunteers themselves) to work with HAU. HA-USA’s purpose is to support and strengthen Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) as HAU continues to expand the availability and impact of high-quality palliative care in Uganda and across Africa for patients with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

Our efforts are driven by a commitment to the vision, mission, and ethos that underly HAU’s activities.

Mission

Bring peace to the suffering in Africa through providing and facilitating affordable and accessible palliative care in Uganda and other African countries.

Vision

Hospice Africa Uganda was founded in 1992 by Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Anne Merriman with the vision of Palliative care for all in need in Africa. 

Ethos

The patient and family are positioned at the centre of a model for holistic, accessible, and affordable palliative care provided in ways that respect the culture in which care is provided.

The three pillars of HAU are as follows:

  • Provide pain relief and holistic care for those dying or suffering from cancer and other life-limiting illnesses
  • Train and educate health professionals in affordable pain relief and palliative care in Uganda and other African countries
  • Build a coalition of organizations working in partnership in Uganda and across Africa to spread knowledge and adoption of palliative care
